This course is designed by and for industry to improve company performance, process capability, productivity and innovation by up-skilling staff. If you are working in industry, it offers you the chance to gain a professional qualification in Metrology with the view to making a valuable contribution to your company.
This programme builds on Coventry’s reputation for excellence in teaching and research as one of the country’s best universities for the study of ‘Mechanical Engineering’ in the Guardian University Guide 2018. Our teaching team have an extensive knowledge bank and widespread practical manufacturing and metrology experience, having worked with hundreds of businesses from SMEs to global manufacturing companies, helping optimise their own and their supplier’s measurement capability. Companies include as Rolls-Royce, Airbus, BAe, Trescal, Reliance Gears, and NPL.
Learning is delivered in an engaging, realistic and relevant way through ‘live’ industry briefs, applied examples and hands-on activities, taking advantage of our facilities. Teaching is focused on optimising efficiency and reducing manufacturing variation and uncertainty through improved product and process control. The work-based project you undertake in the second year of the course should provide flexibility to allow specialist areas of study and can be tailored to address an organisational need, which can be identified by your employer.
Our course is aligned to industrial standards and best practice application of measurement and metrology tools and techniques. We aim for our syllabus to be informed by our research and the experience gained in broad employer and equipment manufacturer engagement. You will be taught by staff with manufacturing experience providing both strategic and tactical measurement consultancy in the production environment. Their experience not only spans automotive, aerospace, land based power generation, medical devices and calibration laboratory environments, but also includes working with world leading brands of measuring equipment suppliers such as Hexagon Metrology, Nikon Metrology, Zeiss and Renishaws. We have educated, trained and supported hundreds of students and thousands of employees in the manufacturing sector.
Our metrology laboratories house an impressive range of modern 3D dimensional measuring equipment including: laser trackers, articulating arms and scanners, high accuracy coordinate measuring machines (CMM) and photogrammetry, as well as a representation of automated and manual first principle measuring equipment such as surface texture, contact and non-contact profile tracers and a plethora of hand tools and supportive measuring platforms.
Feedback from beneficiary companies is that participants go on to make a real and positive impact on their businesses, improving processes and techniques, liberating unnecessary costs and adding noticeable value.
