Overview

If you are an international student and would like to ‘top-up’ your existing nursing qualifications, this 1-year programme could be for you.

This course is for international Nurses who are qualified to Diploma level in their home country and wish to study an academic uplift for the opportunity to achieve a BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies in one year. The course is a full-time course as a student in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.

Course information

The academic programme is studied full time, and is composed of five mandatory modules which focus on theoretical development.

Some of the theory modules include shared learning with UK resident diplomate level Registered Nurses, which is a great opportunity to debate and discuss health care from an international perspective.

Modules

  • Principles of Professional Nursing Practice

    This module is specifically designed to meet the needs of international nurses undertaking the BSc (Hons) Nursing. It recognises the particular needs regarding cultural, educational and professional acclimatisation. The focus of this module will be on the principles underpinning professional nursing practice, incorporating evidence-informed practice and developing the skills of lifelong learning as a professional requirement. It will concentrate on enhancing related skills including information technology and information literacy in preparing students for further learning.

  • Leadership and change in public service management

    This module will examine current leadership and organisational theories in order to promote a critical appraisal of management principles applied top public service settings. The module is also designed to evaluate the role of public sector governance and how the use of quality improvement initiatives impact on the users experience.

  • Health Assessment Skills

    This module is to introduce students to the knowledge, principles, skills and techniques, to support the undertaking of holistic assessment. The module is designed for students working in a variety of settings and whose assessments may lead up to establishing medical diagnosis.

  • The Scope of Public Health

    This module aims to provide an understanding of the scope, nature and elements of multidisciplinary public health in order to increase awareness of the collective perspective in enhancing the health of populations. It will examine underpinning theory and its application to contemporary public health practice, including the issues surrounding health needs assessment in determining public health priorities for action.

  • Reviewing Research for Professional Practice

    This module essentially allows students to examine a body of research evidence and develop skills in critically reviewing selected literature of relevance to health studies or professional practice. The conduct of the review will enable students to build upon and enhance their skills and knowledge base in research and project management. In so doing students will be prepared to foster research based innovation and change in practice. In turn, this has potential to underpin personal development, enhancement of information and knowledge resources and processes, along with improvements in quality within the student’s own practice setting.

Teaching methods include:

  • Moodle online learning resources
  • Data base literature searching skills
  • Classroom learning through blended learning approach, lecture, seminar discussion and workshops

Module assessment is designed to show learning of required learning outcomes for each module. Some modules utilise exams, in addition to written course work. The health assessment module uses practical assessment. Assignments are utilised to demonstrate critical appraisal of evidence base for the topic. Literature review is required for the research module.

In a typical teaching week, you will have 8 -10 hours per week, plus tutorial and independent studies.

The course promotes interaction with other international students and also provided opportunities to interact within taught modules with resident UK nursing Diplomat students who are studying PT for Nursing degrees.
